Vertical Agriculture:Exploring Its Role in Sustainable andResilient Community Food Systems

QuantoTech has teamed up with the University of the Fraser Valley and  i-Open Technologies Inc. to explore innovative ways of addressing food system vulnerabilities and increasing resilience in the face of climate change and economic shocks.

Three outcomes to the study

It is clear that the increasing risk of food shortages are on the forefront of peoples’ minds. Vertical farming is one emerging mechanism to help reduce these stresses.

We were so happy to be included in such a beautiful event and we look forward to working with the Mission Community Skills Centre on projects related to bringing food security to small communities.

We were grateful to get the opportunity to discuss vertical farming with the Minister of Agriculture and Food, Honourable Lana Popham, as well as the many other provincial and municipal government officials.

Devastating Flooding in BC

The flooding in Abbotsford has been devastating to many of those in the agriculture industry. It really has shown the fragility of our supply chain and the need to protect it against the further devastating effects of climate change. This is unfortunately only the beginning.

QuantoTech has been lucky to have our Chilliwack farm on high grounds adjacent to the worst of the flooding; however, no one from the QuantoTech team is able to access the farm. We are happy to report that all of our automation and monitoring technology has come to use and allowed us to remotely observe the farm while the grow recipes work their magic. We have also teamed up with the neighbouring First Nations to continue planting and harvesting at the QuantoTech farm to keep up a constant supply of leafy greens to the affected community.

We are happy to be able to support the community during these challenges. For ways to support the flood victims, head to the Canadian Red Cross and Abbotsford Disaster Relief Fund.

Initial Qfarm Results Prove Price-parity with Mexico and California on Produce Sold through Northern Greens

QuantoTech both operates its farms and designs and builds its own proprietary equipment. This vertical integration eliminates the costs and inefficiencies of outsourced manufacturers who sell equipment to farmers. This allows our farms to operate at a significantly reduced cost, even in small deployments, and gives us cost parity with California and Mexico produce.

With vertical integration, QuantoTech is in the process of rapid deployment of farms of all sizes suitable to satisfy the needs of the communities in which they are located.

The QuantoTech team designs vertical farming solutions and manufactures them locally in BC using many “grow recipes” developed over the years. QuantoTech’s control and monitoring systems can reduce the labour involved in growing produce to support local micro-farms that service the community in which they are located. Their flagship farm is located in Chilliwack, where they produce various lettuces sold across the Lower Mainland. We had a chance to interview the founding member of QuantoTech, Alycia van der Gracht, to learn more about their operation. Check out her answers below!

QuantoTech Solutions Ltd. Begins Deployment of Enclosed Vertical Grow System in Chilliwack

April 21, 2021 – QuantoTech Solutions has begun deployment of a highly scalable, vertical grow system in an unused room of an existing building in Chilliwak, B.C. The grow system can be scaled to fit any existing building or be housed in its own dedicated structure. This system maximizes usable grow space, especially in locations where traditional growing would otherwise be limited.

“The versatility of our system allows us to rapidly deploy in, and access, a wide range of locations be it in small northern or remote communities, underutilized urban space, and everything in between,” said Alycia van der Gracht, Founder.
