Devastating Flooding in BC

The flooding in Abbotsford has been devastating to many of those in the agriculture industry. It really has shown the fragility of our supply chain and the need to protect it against the further devastating effects of climate change. This is unfortunately only the beginning.

QuantoTech has been lucky to have our Chilliwack farm on high grounds adjacent to the worst of the flooding; however, no one from the QuantoTech team is able to access the farm. We are happy to report that all of our automation and monitoring technology has come to use and allowed us to remotely observe the farm while the grow recipes work their magic. We have also teamed up with the neighbouring First Nations to continue planting and harvesting at the QuantoTech farm to keep up a constant supply of leafy greens to the affected community.

We are happy to be able to support the community during these challenges. For ways to support the flood victims, head to the Canadian Red Cross and Abbotsford Disaster Relief Fund.

Initial Qfarm Results Prove Price-parity with Mexico and California on Produce Sold through Northern Greens

QuantoTech both operates its farms and designs and builds its own proprietary equipment. This vertical integration eliminates the costs and inefficiencies of outsourced manufacturers who sell equipment to farmers. This allows our farms to operate at a significantly reduced cost, even in small deployments, and gives us cost parity with California and Mexico produce.

With vertical integration, QuantoTech is in the process of rapid deployment of farms of all sizes suitable to satisfy the needs of the communities in which they are located.

The QuantoTech team designs vertical farming solutions and manufactures them locally in BC using many “grow recipes” developed over the years. QuantoTech’s control and monitoring systems can reduce the labour involved in growing produce to support local micro-farms that service the community in which they are located. Their flagship farm is located in Chilliwack, where they produce various lettuces sold across the Lower Mainland. We had a chance to interview the founding member of QuantoTech, Alycia van der Gracht, to learn more about their operation. Check out her answers below!

QuantoTech Solutions Ltd. Begins Deployment of Enclosed Vertical Grow System in Chilliwack

April 21, 2021 – QuantoTech Solutions has begun deployment of a highly scalable, vertical grow system in an unused room of an existing building in Chilliwak, B.C. The grow system can be scaled to fit any existing building or be housed in its own dedicated structure. This system maximizes usable grow space, especially in locations where traditional growing would otherwise be limited.

“The versatility of our system allows us to rapidly deploy in, and access, a wide range of locations be it in small northern or remote communities, underutilized urban space, and everything in between,” said Alycia van der Gracht, Founder.

What Challenges Face Global Food Systems?

Checkout QuantoTech’s article on vertical farming for Alacrity Canada:

“The global food system faces challenges to feed the rapidly growing world population. According to the United Nations’ 2015 world population report, the current population of the world (7.3 billion) is expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that food production will have to increase by 70% from the 2007 level in order to accommodate this rapid growth…”

QuantoTech selected for BC Fast Pilot Program

We are proud to announce that QuantoTech was selected for the BC Fast Pilot Program to showcase our enclosed grow system at two sites in the Mackenzie B.C. region.

NRC IRAP and Innovate BC invest in British Columbia businesses through B.C. Fast Pilot Program

Federal and provincial funding will help 22 B.C. companies pilot technology at customer sites and create new jobs across the province.

September 17, 2020 – Vancouver, B.C – National Research Council of Canada The National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP) and Innovate BC, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to invest more than $2M in research and development funding for 22 new projects through the B.C. Fast Pilot Program.

This is the second MOU NRC IRAP and Innovate BC have signed, and marks the second round of B.C. Fast Pilot funding. The B.C. Fast Pilot Program helps SMEs design, build, and operate a pilot plant or small demonstration of their technology in real-world conditions. The program allows B.C. technology companies to demonstrate the impact of their product, measure the value of their solution, and encourage customer adoption. For customers, the program offers a way to minimize some of the risk that traditional industries encounter when adopting new technologies.”

This program not only allows us to showcase our systems, but helps increase food security and job promotion to the region as we implement our pilot.

“Today’s partnership between NRC IRAP and Innovate BC will help small and medium-sized businesses grow and compete in the global marketplace. By supporting these tech companies, our government is helping to create more jobs across B.C. while getting new, innovative ideas off the ground.” The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry.

“We are very thankful to have been selected for the BC Fast Pilot Program along with many other innovative companies. Increasing food security to remote and northern communities has been a long-term goal for us as we’ve developed our technology. This pilot allows us to take a huge step forward towards that goal through a real-world pilot. We couldn’t have received this funding without the support of our amazing partners: The College of New Caledonia, Ace Victory Building Center, and Tsay Keh Dene Nation,” Alycia van der Gracht, Founder.

We are excited to get our pilot up and running and begin proving the value of our technology in improving food security, and food quality, for communities Canada-wide.

QuantoTech Solutions Ltd. Lighting System has First Winter Harvest in Prince George

QuantoTech deployed an LED lighting system to prove the success of winter enclosed growing in Prince George, B.C. with temperatures dipping as low as -30 Celsius.

“We can utilize both existing and new spaces to implement LED and hydroponic grow technology for winter crops. By using multi-level growing we can maximize the available growing space with a small footprint. Using a grow system that can be implemented in a wide variety of spaces opens the doors to any community with underutilized, climate controllable space, and access to electrical and water, to begin growing. This is a great way to increase food security year-round,” said Alycia van der Gracht, Founder.
